fruit gone bad

Dear Laura;

The Fruit Gone Bad are ready for shipping.
To own a Fruit Gone Bad all you need to do is write a short
narrative of how your fruit went bad and send that narrative to
me. I will add the story to the website and place your bad fruit in
the mail to you.

Please forward this email to friends and family who would be
interested in owning a Fruit gone Bad.

Pears are in the rose family.
Typically firm and fragrant.
Fresh or canned, a real treat.
Without proper care, bruising will occur, which will cause brown spots and create the delicate skin to tear and the rotting process soon begins.
If you must transport a pear, it is best done in a hard plastic container, fitting
snuggly so as not to cause jostling and the dreaded bruising.

Please see Figure A for identification of a rotten, bruised pear.

Clearly, little resemblance of the original firm, smooth skinned fresh beauty we know.
Recipes follow.

Salad with Bleu Cheese, Pears and Roasted Walnuts

1 fresh, firm pear

4-6 ozs. Bleu cheese
1/2 cup roasted walnuts
mixed salad greens; red and green leaf lettuces, radicchio, escarole and arugula

salad dressing: 1/4 cup red wine vinegar, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, 1/2 cup olive oil and 3 tbls. Honey
salt & fresh ground pepper

Wash and dry the pear. Slice in half, then in quarters and core
the quarters. Slice the quarters into thin sections.
Bleu cheese can be hand crumbled.
Chop the roasted walnuts coarsely.
Dress the salad greens with the salad dressing to your taste. Toss to coat all leaves.
Add the salt & freshly ground pepper & toss well.
Add the sliced pears, crumbled bleu cheese and chopped walnuts to dressed salad.
Toss gently, so as to mix, but not to mush the pears.

I once knew a fruit named Chiquita. Chiquita went bad. I would love to write a narrative about it but Chiquita did some terrible things. Let's just say there were many that saw the underside of her peel. She's doing better now, after a stint at Promises. She lives happily now with a Kiwi in a basket.
